PhD Position Summary
The Department of Biostatistics at EBPI invites applications for a four-year PhD position financed by the SNSF in the structured PhD Program in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Life Science Zurich Graduate School.
This PhD position is part of the SNSF project led by PD PhD Malgorzata Roos and entails the following responsibilities:
- Assistance in organizing workshops
- Specification of reproducibility rules for the whole project
- Review of frequentist and Bayesian statistical methods
- Consolidation of methods through mathematical derivations
- Implementation of methods in functions in the open-source software R
- Documentation of functions and contributions to an R package and a Shiny web application
- Validation of methods through simulations and applications to real-world data
- Presentation of research results at international scientific meetings
- Publication of research results in peer-reviewed journal articles
- Supervision of master theses
- Teaching assistant duties in the Master Program in Biostatistics
Your profile
Successful applicants should be highly motivated and have a strong background in mathematics, statistics, and programming. Ideally, the applicant should hold a master’s degree in statistics, applied mathematics or a related field. Applicants with experience in both frequentist and Bayesian statistics will be given preference. The applicant has good programming skills in the open-source R software environment and can generate dynamic reports and use version control. Previous experience with developing packages in R and an interactive Shiny web application would be an asset. The applicant has excellent communication skills and can work both independently and in a team. The applicant should also have a solid scientific writing experience and excellent written and spoken English skills.

There is a large research community including many PhD students in the Department of Biostatistics itself and in the structured PhD Program in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Life Science Zurich Graduate School. Joint UZH and ETH seminars are regularly organized. The successful PhD candidate will obtain a PhD (Dr. sc. nat.) in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the Faculty of Science at University of Zurich, Switzerland.
